Hearst Castle
Drive about one half hour north from the Masterpiece Motel in Morro Bay and you will arrive at one of the most amazing places in the world. Hearst Castle.
It's that near to us.
William Randolph Hearst was the man who owned thirty newspapers, one of the richest men in the world, a man who liked to spend his money, and who wanted what he wanted. Here’s what he told Julia Morgan, the amazing lady architect from Oakland, California: “I would like to build something upon the hill at San Simeon. I get tired of going up there and camping in tents. I’m getting a little too old for that. I’d like to get something a little more comfortable, maybe a nice little bungalow."

About thirty years later he had 56 bedrooms, 61 bathrooms, tennis courts, movie theater, zoo with wild animals, a swimming pool that would have freaked out Michael Phelps, and a Roman temple brought in pieces from Europe. Julia Morgan was designing a Castle in Spain, barely keeping up with Mr. Hearst’s bungalow requirements. Also, lots of art and furniture stored in boxes waiting for her to build the rooms to put them in.
This place is almost as good as the Masterpiece. |
